Canal Boat Tour

It was another windy day in Copenhagen, and it was raining on and off all day, but we took the bull by the horns and decided to do the Canal Tour anyway.   We went for the boat with the roof, deciding sitting in the rain as a captive audience on a boat was not for us.
It did indeed shower during the tour but not heavy and we were able to keep the side window open and still enjoy the tour, seeing the city of Copenhagen from a different angle by water.

The tour guide was very entertaining. He was also very strict about telling everyone to make sure they were seated as we approached every bridge along the canal area, several of them were very low indeed.

This building was originally a torpedo boat workshop for the Danish Navy and lay abandoned for many years.  Recently redeveloped into the most expensive apartments in Copenhagen.

The little green roof buildings are the Royal Pavillions where the royals wait to board the royal yacht.
Then behind these is the Port Authority building.

The frigate Peter Skram, the Navy’s flagship during the Cold War is now open to the public as a museum ship.
The submarine SÆLEN, was in active service in the Danish Navy from 1993 to 2004 in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. It has been a museum since 2004 and is fully preserved as it was then.

Christianholme is an artificial island that was constructed in 1696 at the heart of Copenhagen’s harbour. It has had many important functions over the last 300 years; first as a shipyard, then an arsenal for ammunition and canons, a military hospital, warehouses for salt and coal.  Then from the mid 1900s it was used by the Danish press to store paper for the daily newspapers.  Which is way the area is known by most as Papiroen or Paper Island.  Since 2012, it has been redeveloped into a new neighbourhood area and with museums and art galleries, food halls and other cultural hotspots.

Nyhaven waterfront, such a pretty area, filled with cafes and restaurants.

The Circle Bridge, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge.  See video below also.

The lowest bridge in Copenhagen, make sure all your fingers are inside the boat and heads are down to go under here.   It was a very tight fit.  See the video.

NyHavn

After the boat tour we strolled through NyHavn harbour area and we stopped at a lovely cafe for lunch and a cider as it had started to rain again.

Kongens Nytorv or The King’s New Square

After lunch we found this beautiful square, surrounded by the most stunning buildings.
