Dover

The Bus Queen and King reign supreme ...

Sunday, 14th May, 2023.

The journey to Dover Castle was just a wee walk in the park, or just a succession of buses.  We took the Bus 16 from Black Horse Inn, Densole to Folkestone, stopped for fuel top up for the onward journey (coffee and scones), then Bus 81 to Dover, then Bus 102 to the Castle.  Had an awesome day at the Castle (one day isn’t enough to see Dover).  Then took all the buses home again in reverse…The Bus stars rule.  Six bus rides in one day.

Check out the view from the top of the castle…legs were like jelly by the end of the day.

The only downer was no scampi and chips at the pub…..Sundays no food after 2pm.  Had to settle with the pint or two, then back to Bailey for fish fingers.

View from the bus

Dover Castle

                            First view of the castle.

                        The entry bridge

View from the battlements to the harbour.

We did the Secret Tunnels tour, unfortunately no photographs allowed inside.  Even though I had my hearing aids in I didn't hear these instructions (neither did Perry), so I had to delete my photos while the tour guide watched.  Such drama!!

We arrived on the exit point of the tunnel tour on the cliff edge.

View to the harbour below the tunnel exit.

And up another hill to the Roman Lighthouse and the Saxon church.

Beautiful mosaic tiles up all the walls.

Now onwards to the Castle Tower itself ...

Recreation of a bedchamber

Many, many steps, and many chambers ... and you go down so you can go up to the Tower.

Finally from the top of Dover Castle Tower.  Magnificent view.  A truly strategic placement for a Castle and fortifications.  The importance of this location from early Romans, through Saxons and Napoleonic wars and then WW1 and WW11 testify to that fact.

Towards the Saxon church and Roman lighthouse and the harbour sea walls beyond.

A great day was had by the Perry's at Dover Castle.
